You may not have known it, but the song "I Go To Sleep" was originally written in 1965 by Ray Davis, the lead singer of the English band The Kinks.

There are some timelessly beautiful cover versions of the song, including newer interpretations.

As you're about to learn in this "Uncover" blog post, the song „I Go to Sleep“ has been taken on by international pop music heavyweights.

Let the original and the cover versions have an effect on you. There's bound to be at least one interpretation of the song that you particularly like.

„I Go to Sleep“ - Pretenders

The British band Pretenders released a cover of the song in 1981.

„I Go to Sleep“ - Peggy Lee

Peggy Lee's version is one of the first released cover versions of "I Go to Sleep". In fact, Peggy Lee's interpretation appeared already in 1965.

„I Go to Sleep“ - Anika

The British singer-songwriter Anika has released a cover version of the song in 2010, which is not so easy to put into a music category as the other versions (rather pop).

„I Go to Sleep“ - The Kinks

And now the original version of "I Go to Sleep" by The Kinks.

The original by The Kinks has finally found a home on the second CD, as the eleventh track on the Deluxe Edition (2 Cd Set) of The Kinks second album "Kinda Kinks".

It is a demo recorded by Ray Davis on May 24, 1965 at Regent Sound Studios in London.

„I Go to Sleep“ - Sia

In 2007, Australian singer-songwriter Sia released the album "Some People Have REAL Problems."

The album includes "I Go to Sleep" as the seventh track.

„I Go to Sleep“ - Cher

Shortly after the composition of the song "I Go to Sleep" by Ray Davis, in 1965, the album "All I Really Want to Do" by Cher was released. On this Cher album, the song can be found as the second track.

With the tune „I‘ve Been Waiting For You“, we have a powerful original and cover version of Neil Young and David Bowie, two of the most influential singers and songwriters of their generation.

Between original and cover version is almost a quarter of a century, almost exactly 24 years.

Original and cover version

'I‘ve Been Waiting For You' by Neil Young

„I‘ve Been Waiting For You“ appeared on Neil Young's debut solo album „Neil Young“ (yes, that’s the name of the album), released in 1968.

The track is not one of Neil Young's most famous songs, but it is an atmospheric folk rock masterpiece with short and crisp two and a half minutes in length.

The song was produced by Neil Young together with David Briggs, who has also worked on music projects with world stars such as Elvis Presley, George Harrison and Alice Cooper, among others.

'I‘ve Been Waiting For You' by David Bowie

The cover version of the Neil Young song I've Been Waiting For You was recorded in 2002 by none other than David Bowie.

I've Been Waiting For You is the sixth track on his album Heathen.

Heathen was recorded by David Bowie in the period August 2001 to January 2002 with high-profile guest musicians: including Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Pete Townshend (The Who) and Tony Visconti.

David Bowie teleported "I've Been Waiting For You" into the new millennium with his unique musical flair.

Just like the original with a powerful raw rock sound, David Bowie used his creativity to create a new timeless song in its own right.

A completely different song

'I‘ve Been Waiting For You' by ABBA

The song I've been waiting for you by ABBA, released in 1974, has only the title in common with the song by Neil Young. The ABBA composition is completely different and completely independent from the Neil Young song.

In the movie Mamma Mia! Here we go again, the ABBA song is performed by the three actresses Amanda Seyfried, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski.

Single release date: November 18, 1974

Bette Davis Eyes is once again such an extraordinary song, which became world famous only with the cover version.
The original version of the song Bette Davis Eyes, which Jackie DeShannon composed together with Donna Weiss, and the cover version by Kim Carnes could hardly be more different.

Original Version of „Bette Davis Eyes“ by Jackie deShannon

When Jackie DeShannon and Donna Weiss composed and wrote the original version of the song Bette Davis Eyes in 1974, they could not have imagined that about seven years later a cover version of the song as a New Wave synthesizer tune would become a world hit and write music history.

The original version of Bette Davis Eyes can be assigned to the musical styles of country rock and folk. And that's also the exciting thing about this song: you probably don't realize right away when listening to Jackie DeShannon's single, which huge potential is hidden in the song as a New Wave Synthesizer cover version.

Besides, it was not Jackie DeShannon's goal to release a commercially successful single with Bette Davis Eyes. The song was "only" released for her album "New Arrangement".

Cover Version of „Bette Davis Eyes“ by Kim Carnes

The Kim Carnes cover version of Bette Davis Eyes is characterized mainly by Kim's distinctive voice in combination with the unmistakably beautiful synthesizer riffs.

The song, released as a single in 1981, captured the number one spot on the official U.S. singles chart Billboard Hot 100 and held the top position for nine weeks.

The single was also extremely successful internationally, with the cover version reaching the top of the official singles charts in numerous countries.

Kim Carnes' version of Bette Davis Eyes became one of the most internationally successful singles of the 80s.

Despite its age, the cover is by no means musically dusty, but a timeless masterpiece of the 80s. It's one of those songs you can listen to over and over again without it getting on your nerves.
