Punk blues is a music genre with a combination of punk and blues elements. We have listed important representatives of the punk blues genre for you, whether bands or solo artists.

The Black Keys

Lonely Boy by The Black Keys is the music video with the most views on their official YouTube channel. It was published on her YouTube channel on October 26, 2011. One of The Black Keys’ musical styles has been categorized as Punk Blues.

Jack White

The title of an online article in the Canadian music magazine Exlaim! about an album by Jack White is: ‘No Name’ Is Jack White’s Ferocious Return to Old-School Punk Blues.[1] This fact should already be considered proof that Jack White’s music can also be assigned to the punk blues genre. His album No Name was released in 2024.

The Kills

About the song Future Starts Slow, which the English-American rock duo The Kills performed on the late night show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the music magazine SPIN titled the performance as follows: The Kills Bring Goth-Punk Blues to ‘Fallon’.[2]

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

The name of the band The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion suggests that the music has something to do with the blues. In fact, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have numerous musical influences from the following genres, among others: punk, blues, garage, rockabilly, soul, rhythm and blues and hip hop.

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds fuse garage punk and blues rock. Kid Congo Powers has also played in a number of other punk blues bands, most notably The Gun Club.

The Gun Club

Over the years, The Gun Club had 27 musicians in the band. Most of them were guitarists, bassists and drummers. The band’s singer was Jeffrey Lee Pierce. In addition to punk blues, The Gun Club’s musical styles included post-punk, punk rock, psychobilly, alternative rock, punk blues and cowpunk.

Before The Chorus

Episode 58: Feist

Feis uses "Breadcrumbs" for re-encounter ideas

Feist uses the image of breadcrumbs as she retrieves her ideas for a later time: "And so I'm going to put a breadcrumb in the forest in the form of this particular line so I can re-encounter that idea again in 10 years and five years, in six months, 30 shows from now."
[3]

Episode 259 - Feist

Feist's songwriting and the sock puppet

If you're invited to the Sodajerker Podcast, you'll get an in-depth look at songwriting. In this episode, the three musicians Feist, Simon Barber and Brian O'Connor talk about the album 'Multitudes'. It's about how songwriting for an album and touring relate to each other. Feist describes how the songs were not written in isolation from touring. She calls it an “inductive process” in which the songs are written. Feist gives a visual example of this, namely a sock puppet: "So it's actually been like the sock puppet was turned inside out and all you see is the threads put back together, turned back into the sock puppet, turned inside out again." [4]

Q with Tom Power

Feist on Multitudes, motherhood & memories + Nico Paulo’s new record

Feist's success and later music

The end of the interview addresses Feist' songwriting after her great success.
Tom Power asks Feist to what extent her great musical success at the time (especially her song “1234”) ad an impact on her. Particularly how this success influenced the music she made from then on.
Feist talks about the influence of success on her later music production. There was a joking break for instruments such as the glockenspiel and the tambourine. But that this was only temporary. After a few years she tried to remember what life is about and get to a place where she can be in the moment. Writing her new music is not about repeating something or being different. It's about capturing the new moment. The music is the result of her inner longings. Feist hopes that listeners can find a similar emotional connection to her music. Feist appreciates it when people listen to her music with a headphone experience. Her job offers the opportunity to create such shared experiences.[5]

Unfortunately, we don't always have the opportunity to take time out to listen to music and do nothing else at the same time.
But there are ways to listen to music and do another activity at the same time. It is important that listening to music and these activities do not interfere with each other.
I have put together 15 great opportunities to listen to music that complement listening to music perfectly.

Ironing

Listen to music while ironing

Ironing is not exactly the most exciting activity and for some it can get a bit monotonous and boring. Why not use the time while ironing to listen to your favorite music?

Washing dishes

Listen to music while washing dishes

Washing dishes is a household chore that you do pretty much every day if you don't have a dishwasher. Doing the dishes doesn't have to be a chore if you can listen to your favorite music or radio at the same time.

Showering

Listen to music while showering

Showering is also an activity that invites you to listen to music. However, please note that you will need waterproof Bluetooth speakers or a waterproof shower radio suitable for the bathroom.

Coding

Listen to music while coding

If you're a coder who can't make progress or if you just can't get into a state of flow during your coding work, then the right music can bring you closer to it.

Doing laundry

Listen to music while doing laundry

It usually takes more than an hour to wash and dry your laundry. Next time you have to do another load of laundry at the laundromat, have your headphones with you, connect them to your smartphone and listen to your favorite music.

Cooking

Listen to music while cooking

If you're passionate about cooking, preparing a meal can take longer than an hour. So it's good to have your music playlist ready to listen to while you cook.

Baking

Listen to music while baking

Do you like to bake a cake, bread or other treats from time to time? Listening to music while baking can boost your creativity to try out new baking recipes.

Gaming

Listen to music while gaming

Video games are fun, but can be quite exhausting in the long run because you're looking intently at the screen for a long time. A playlist with relaxing and motivating music can be a good balance when gaming gets stressful.

Cleaning

Listen to music while cleaning

Do you know that too? It's time to clean your home again, vacuum, mop the floor, dust. It takes a bit of effort. But if you combine cleaning with your favorite music, you'll be more motivated to tackle this necessary task.

Studying

Listen to music while studying

The music you listen to is important when learning. If the music makes you nervous and impatient, if it distracts you too much, then certain types of music don't make sense for learning. The music should also ideally not contain any words, i.e. no lyrics, rather instrumental.[1]

Drawing or painting

Listen to music while drawing or painting

Creativity is required when painting or drawing. You become a real artist when you create something new. This works best with inspiration. Listening to music has helped many an artist to create something so beautiful that no one before them has succeeded.

Running

Listen to music while running

Some enjoy the silence and the sounds of nature while jogging. Others need motivation to run longer distances. There are special playlists with motivating songs that give you a tailwind, figuratively speaking, to get you closer to your running goal.

Waiting

Listen to music while waiting

There are countless ways of waiting in everyday life. At the doctor's or in the administration waiting room, in the queue at the supermarket checkout or in front of the ice cream parlor in summer. Take your smartphone or MP3 player, put on your headphones and make longer waiting times more pleasant by listening to your music.

Workout

Listen to music while working out

Motivation and endurance are required in the gym and music is a great motivator. Nowadays, you no longer need to wear heavy and large headphones, which can sometimes be a nuisance. It's also less hygienic if your sweat runs into the ear pads of your over-ear headphones. It's more pleasant to listen to your music in the gym with in-ear headphones that connect via Bluetooth.

Meditating & Yoga

Listen to music while meditating

Especially if you are a beginner at meditation or yoga, specially tailored music will help you not to get too lost in your thoughts and not to jump from one association to the next and not find your way back to the object of meditation.

According to a study, adults listen to music for an average of 18 hours per week, which is over 2.5 hours of music per day.[1]

That's a considerable amount of our available daytime.

At what point is listening to music actually a hobby and when is it just an interest, a brief irregular pastime?

I would like to explore these questions in this article.

What are characteristics of listening to music as a hobby?

Now come four points that are important characteristics for listening to music as a hobby.

1. Hearing music as a deliberate activity

If it is not a coincidence, but you actively choose listening to music for a certain period of time in your free time, it is a voluntary but intentional, deliberate activity.

If you like to intentionally schedule some time listening to music every workday at the end of the day, then music is more than a casual activity for you.

This is our first point in supporting the fact your music listening is a hobby.

2. You're listening to music in your free time

A Hobby is carried out during free time, it's a leisure occupation. So if you're listening to music in your free time, that's already a first sign of a hobby.

Therefore, if you are listening to music while you work, it cannot be considered a hobby. Hobbies are practiced in spare time in order to relax.

3. A certain enthusiasm, which goes beyond a mere interest

If you think music is something that plays on the side, like elevator music, and you don't care if it's on or if you can't hear anything, then you probably have less enthusiasm for music in general.

But if you are so enthusiastic about music that you get carried away listening to music at home on the sofa and/or at concerts and festivals, and you talk passionately about singers and bands with family and friends, then music is most likely something like a hobby for you.

4. Enjoying music not as an obligation, it's no daily work

If you don't have a sense of obligation that you have to accomplish anything by listening to music, that speaks to a hobby.

If you are having fun at the moment of listening to music, you forget time and space while listening, then music is a real enjoying leisure activity.

5. You're listening to music regularly

A hobby is performed regularly. For example, if you're listening to four hours of music a day for five days and then don't hear music for several years, that speaks more to a short-term interest and not a hobby.

If, on the other hand, you are listening to music for half an hour a day, 2 to 3 times a week, this is a regular activity and is therefore more indicative of a hobby.

6. You earn no money with listening to music

If you make money listening to music, then it's no longer a hobby, it's a business.

Music journalists who listen to music on behalf of publishers, e.g. write music reviews in daily newspapers and music blogs, and earn money with it are mostly freelancers who have their own business.
It can be assumed that these music critics indulge in their hobby and enjoy music in their free time. They have thus turned their hobby into a profession.

Interest vs. Hobby vs. Business

There are different levels for listening to music. This is not a rating, but only to express the personal importance of music for the listener, the time investment in listening to music and so on.

Following table shows a comparison of listening to music with casual interest, as a hobby or as a business.

Features Interest Hobby Business
Frequency low regularly, at least twice a week everyday some hours
Enthusiasm low at least high very high
Earn Money no no yes
Obligation no no yes
In Free Time yes yes yes
At Work no no yes

Yes! It can be an enjoying hobby

Music composed from real creativity is like a universal language without words that everyone in the world loves and would like to shake a leg to.

At best, listening to music allows us to forget our thoughts for a moment and joyfully devote ourselves to the hobby of music.
